Electricity for Schools

The Office of Government Procurement (OGP), following consultations with the Department of Education and Skills and the School Procurement Unit (SPU), held a mini-competition to supply electricity to schools for a three year period commencing 1 May 2018 until 30 April 2021. The OGP  awarded the new contract to Energia, which is estimated to generate annual savings in excess of €340,000 for the school sector as a whole.

It is important to be aware that if your school is outside of the OGP bundle, or is not already covered under a formal fixed-term contract with one of the Electricity Supply companies, then it is probable that your school is being charged at a ‘default’ rate, which will be higher than the rate you could be achieving within the OGP bundle.  If you wish to add your school to the OGP bundle for electricity, please see below

1. If you are currently in a contract with Energia for electricity (unrelated to the OGP bundle), please contact Energia to identify the rates and conditions available under the OGP bundle and to move you to those rates, if they are favourable for you to do so. If you are with a supplier other than Energia and wish to move to the OGP bundle, please note the following.

2. If you are not tied to a contract and free to leave that company without incurring an early exit fee you are invited to complete the Office of Government Procurement registration form. Soft copies of this registration form entitled Electricity Data Collection available to download here/íoslódáil anseo. Together with this form please include a scanned copy of both sides of a recent electricity bill. Details of where and who to forward the information is contained in the registration document itself. The OGP will then shortly send you an offer of a contract detailing the tariff rates on offer to you based on information supplied from your last bill. If you accept the offer of this new contract, please complete the accompanying paperwork with the contract offer and return it to the e mail address supplied in the contract documentation.

3. If you are currently in a contract with another electricity provideryou are entitled to find out from your provider for how long you are tied to that arrangement and what, if any, of any early exit charge. To determine what the rates are for your school as part of the OGP schools contract and to enable you complete a comparison exercise, please complete the registration form entitled Electricity Data Collection available to download here/íoslódáil anseo. Together with this form please include a scanned copy of both sides of a recent electricity bill. Details of where and who to forward the information is contained in the registration document itself. The OGP then will shortly send you an offer of a contract detailing the tariff rates on offer to you based on information supplied from your last bill. If you accept the offer of this new contract, please complete the accompanying paperwork with the contract offer and return it to the e mail address supplied in the contract documentation.

If  you do not wish to take up this contract offer for the school sector at this time, please inform the SPU at procurementsupport@spu.ie, stating your reasons why. This will enable us to maintain an accurate log of what schools are in contract elsewhere and avoid having to communicate repeat reminders. If you currently are in contract and wish to move to the OGP bundle at a later stage, please inform the SPU of the contract expiry date and the SPU will make contact again nearer the time.

For any questions or points of clarification on the above process I would encourage you to contact the SPU team at procurementsupport@spu.ie
